Induction of Region 6 Volunteer – Berbicians Sign on to the Volunteer Corps

A total of sixty-four (64) Berbicians were formally oriented and inducted into the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps (CDC VC) on Saturday, November 17, 2012. Their induction followed a comprehensive orientation session at the New Amsterdam Nursing School, and has since pushed the number of CDC volunteers much closer to 100.

Region Four Volunteers Trained in Conflict Management

Workshop Facilitator: Mr. George WachiraCivil Defence Commission volunteers from Region 4 are now better equipped to manage and deal with conflicts that may arise in their line of work, especially in high tension disaster situations.  These volunteers were able to benefit from a “Conflict Management” Workshop that was convened by the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps (CDC VC) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which continuously assists and supports the work of the CDC and the CDC VC. The need for such a workshop was recognised as it was identified that volunteers may come into conflict situations while working during disasters or emergencies, as tension and anxiety levels are usually high during these times. As such, the objective of the workshop was to enhance the capacities of the volunteers and to provide them with the skills/tools for effectively managing conflicts and maintaining order during disasters.

Capacity Building of Region 4 Volunteers – Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH)

Volunteers from Region 4 were able to benefit from training in key areas related to disaster risk management, in an attempt to provide them with the knowledge needed to ensure proper hygiene and sanitation, especially during disasters and emergency situations.  The volunteers participated in a Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) Workshop, conducted on Saturday November 3, 2012 at the Civil Defence Commission, Thomas Road, Thomas Lands. The workshop was convened by the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps in collaboration with the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) and the Ministry of Health/Education.

Region 4 Volunteers Trained in Proposal Writing

Civil Defence Commission volunteers from Georgetown can now say that they have heightened capacity in the area of “Proposal Writing.” The volunteers participated in a “Proposal Writing” Workshop that was conducted to better enhance their capabilities to write and edit project applications.  The need for such a workshop was identified as the Volunteer Corps would sometimes be required have to draft and submit proposals to access funds to carry out community projects.

Berbice Volunteer Benefit from Training in Disaster Risk Management, Health and Climate Change

Civil Defence Commission volunteers, specifically those from Region 6, benefitted from capacity building in areas of several areas related to Disaster Management, in an attempt to make them better able to perform their roles. The “Disaster Risk Management, Health and Climate Change” Workshop was convened  by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) as one of the many capacity building activities to be conducted with volunteers from Region 6.

Launching of the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps (CDC VC)

The launch culminated a symposium organised by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) in celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction, which bore the theme ‘Women and Girls, the invisible force of Resilience.’

International Volunteer Day 2012

Bonn, Germany: Today, December 5th, is International Volunteer Day (IVD).  From Argentina to Pakistan, Slovenia to Timor-Leste, volunteers and voluntary organizations are holding a variety of events including parades, campaigns, conferences, competitions, blood donation drives and coordinated volunteer actions.  They are celebrating with their communities, local institutions, UN organizations and government authorities to recognise the hope and commitment that volunteers bring to make the world a better place.

Georgetown, Guyana , November 20th, 2012 (CDC) - Sixty-four Berbicians were formally inducted into the Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps (CDCVC) on Saturday, November 17, last. Their induction followed a comprehensive orientation session at the New Amsterdam Nursing School and moves the total number of CDC volunteers closer to the 100 mark.
