Georgetown, Guyana – The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) today conducted a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (W.A.S.H) Training workshop today with several local NGOs. Along with the US Government, Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Commission engaged with local Non Governmental Organisations to discuss the importance of potable water and proper hygiene methods.
Areas such as Hygiene Promotion and Community Engagement, Waste Management and viable Water Sources were examined. Representatives from Blossom Inc., Hope for All, Artistes in Direct Support (AIDS), the Roman Catholic Bishop in Guyana (RCBG), Marwa Consultancy, and Hope Foundation were reminded of the importance of W.A.S.H, particularly in migrant camps and communities across Guyana.
Deputy Director General of the CDC, Lt. Col. Mark Thomas, stressed on the significance of proper sanitation and hygiene practices while sharing staggering world statistics. He indicated that activities such this one can help to bring awareness and reduce health impacts to vulnerable communities and groups. Participants of the exercise were also given water purification tablets as part of a collaborative effort to ensure that there is potable drinking water available even when the source may be contaminated.
