Georgetown, Guyana – The Civil Defence Commission today received a cheque to the amount of G$20,700,000 and a quantity of El Niño Preparedness and Response Resources from the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The event was facilitated at the CDC Headquarters in Thomas Lands.
China’s Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, indicated that her government is committed to supporting the Commission’s efforts during the particularly dry season. She lauded the Government of Guyana’s stance on ensuring that vulnerabilities are minimized during this period and was proud to be a part of the response endeavours.
CDC’s Director General, Col. Nazrul Hussain, expressed gratitude to the Chinese Government and assured the Ambassador that the impacted communities will receive the resources in a timely manner.
Items such as water tanks, water pumps and hoses, potable water containers, water dispensers and fire extinguishers will be distributed to affected communities nationwide, beginning with villages along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
CDC continues to lead drought preparedness and awareness sessions countrywide based on the Prime Minister’s mandate to be prepared for the current El Niño conditions. To date, several administrative regions have benefited from the outreach exercise.
