In response to the River Dam Breach in the Diamond/Grove Village, East Bank Demerara, which occurred around 16:55 hours on Tuesday, 21st March 2023, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) coordinated, established and executed operational management of an emergency shelter for the affected residents. This shelter was activated at the Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, Lot 123 Grove Village, East Bank Demerara.
There was a total of thirty (30) households, comprising of twenty-five (25) children between the ages of five to eighteen years old (5yrs-18yrs), and seventeen (17) adults who were directly impacted by the breach. In an effort to provide continuous support to residents affected by disasters and hazards, the CDC conducted a needs assessment of the community and has maintained effective communication with representatives of the Diamond/Grove National Democratic Council (NDC). As a result, a total of eighty (80) hampers, inclusive of fifty (50) cleaning supplies and thirty (30) food packages, were distributed to residents of the community. Additionally, the emergency shelter, which currently has no shelterees, is being monitored and manned by staff of the Commission who remain dedicated and vigilant. At the time of this release, the water has receded completely in the community and residents are in recovery mode. Rehabilitation works on the River Dam are ongoing and conducted by the Ministry of Public Works.
