In light of continuous and heavy rainfall mainly in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, and Ten over the last 48 hours, the Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC’s) National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) has been activated and is monitoring the flood situation on a 24-hour basis.
Additionally, the Commission commenced the repositing of relief supplies such as sleeping material which have been provided to the Guyana Relief Council’s shelter.
A release from the Commission stated that the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was contacted to place troops on standby to augment the efforts of the staff of the NEOC and at shelters if and when required.
The Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) was contacted to provide a Geographic Information System (GIS) specialist to assist with the preparations of maps. Meanwhile several Government officials visited affected communities to assess the situation.
The Agriculture Ministry’s hydromet department continues to monitor the weather and provide updates to the public, while the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) continues to pay keen attention to pumps and conservancies in the affected regions.
Moreover, the NDIA is also engaged in clearing of outfalls in areas such as Windsor Forest, Good Hope, Green Field, and other affected areas. A report from the Authority assured that all sluices are operational.
In addition to the GRC’s shelter, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s Night Shelter located in East La Penitence has been made available to be used as a shelter for persons who are displaced as a result of flood waters. Thus far however, there have been no reports of persons reporting to the two established shelters.
Initial reports from the Regions stated that some of the homes of residents are inundated with between two to three inches of water. However, over the last 12 hours, rainfall has eased and excessive water is receding in affected areas.
