The Civil Defence Commission Volunteer Corps (CDC VC) is an arm of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), promoting Comprehensive Disaster Management in Guyana through volunteerism. The CDC VC was developed to support the functioning and initiatives of the CDC, the country’s national disaster organisation, particularly at a community level.
Volunteerism is an ideal way to foster a sense of community and augur partisanship. It bridges generational, cultural, social and political gaps by creating a platform for engaging people whilst addressing developmental issues and changes. Particularly in the Disaster Risk Management field, volunteerism creates an opportunity for participation by all in preparing for disasters, mitigating impacts on communities and responding to devastation.
The CDC VC was conceptualized in February 2012, and officially launched on October 12, 2012 at a Symposium organised by the CDC in recognition of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2012. This launching took place at the Guyana International Convention Centre, where volunteers were officially welcomed and pinned by the Director General of the CDC, Col. (Retired) C. Ramsarup.
The CDC VC is an invaluable body within the local society comprising of a growing resource pool of more than 120 volunteers from Regions: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 in Guyana. Volunteers range from military personnel, students, nurses, teachers to doctors who have been trained in areas such as Search and Rescue, Disaster Risk Management, Community Mobilization, First Aid, Damage Assessment and Conflict Resolution. Members of the CDC VC work acidulously every day in effort to achieve the group’s motto “Reducing risks! Helping communities! Saving Lives!”
